RIJSWIJK, The Netherlands, February 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ –

The ANP is the first news agency in the world to use software to detect news in an early stage on Twitter. After a successful pilot of three months, the ANP has signed a contract with RTreporter. The dashboard that RTreporter has developed to automatically detect emerging trends on Twitter, has now been integrated in the newsroom of the ANP and the news gathering process.

Last week CNN and Dataminr announced to work on a service that will attempt to discover news in tweets. RTreporter has been working on this since the beginning of 2013. The dashboard was developed in cooperation with the VU university in Amsterdam and, the most popular news site in the Netherlands. has worked with the Twitter dashboard now for more than a year. The dashboard put editors on the track of news items every day.

The ANP is satisfied with the results of the pilot with RTreporter says Johan Groeneveld, deputy editor. “The goal was to put the newsroom on the track of newsworthy items for a minimum of five times a week. That target has been more than achieved.” The Twitter Dashboard will now be rolled out in the ANP newsroom. A large screen will be placed there, giving the dashboard a prominent place in the newsroom.

Bert Kok, one of the founders of RTreporter, is very pleased with the cooperation with the ANP. “We are working closely with the news agency on the further development of the dashboard. We want to add semantic analysis to make the dashboard even more relevant for journalists. The ANP will be closely involved in this project.”
